Lyrics
ImageLYRICS from the Album “Evolution”
The First Time
If I could see a spring-time flower
For the first time once again
Or for the first time see the ocean
And catch a singing rolling wave
If I could see the eastward sunrise
For the first time I would shout
And I would hear my voice then for the first time
Feel my soul come pouring out
For the first time, oh let me see you
For the first time let the wonder run wild
For the first time, oh let me see you
Oh, let me see like a child
If I could touch a breath-like feather
For the first time once again.
I would not forget it ever
Or would I ever be the same.
If I could hear a Mozart serenade
For the first time I would cry
Cry for joy at spirit soaring
Through every note that’s played
For the first time, oh let me see you
For the first time let the wonder run wild
For the first time, oh let me see you
Oh, let me see like a child
If I could see myself reflected in your eyes
For the first time once again
Would I see the truth there hidden perfectly
That I am you and you are me.

Evolution
I sit by your side
watching the world spin
above your closed eyes

Sleep now and be free.
I want you to know
you can always trust me
Cause I love you tonight you can know that in spite
of all of my standings and rantings and plantings of
nothing at all.
I’m to lead you to bring you the best in yourself
While I search in the dust for my own I
Evolution is keeping the key to the door ‘til you know why
You know why

I turn on a light,
put down the words that are
so hard to write
I've got to be strong,
know that I'll know what is
right before long
You're so young and pristine like the bud on the tree
Let the flower be opening wide to the sun and the
cool blue breeze
I’m to lead you to bring you the best in yourself
While I search in the dust for my own I.
Evolution is keeping the key to the door ‘til you know why
You know why

Don’t Say I Never Told You
In the morning light I now see the lies
And in the dark of night come our alibis
I’m waiting on that rousing sense of one’s time
Through broken chords, through rusty chains of remembering.
There’s a voice inside that is old and wise.
But my foolish pride. Closed ears, closed eyes

Don’t say I never told you
Don’t say I never ever tried
Don’t say I never told you why
On a misty lake I now see you walk
And I’d walk with you, now and forever more.
But I stand on the shore, feet buried in cold sandy earth.
And you’re fading fast as I smell the past one more time.
Now your voice comes down
I hear it now so sweet, so loud, a thunder cloud.
Don’t say I never told you
Don’t say I never ever tried
Don’t say I never told you why

Into Light
I say farewell to an old dream.
I say farewell to a mountainside
I’ve scaled that cliff now enough times
It’s time to sail out on a new tide
So come, tell me it’s alright
A door will open there
Beyond the wounded midnight
Beyond a desperate prayer
And into light.

No Apparent Reason
I hadn't heard the news for ages
At least not for three or four days.
I was driving toward the city
the traffic was banked for 10K's.
I turned the dial on the radio
Came upon a voice filled with glee
She said it's banked to Alderley
For no apparent reason
For no apparent reason
Well I arrived quite late and I told him
He said there'd been a bomb scare in town.
Yesterday on peak hour public transport
A phone call made and a parcel was found.
Well that then seemed to me like a reason,
A blanket of fear spread on the ground.
A crazy hoax, a wicked joke, but maybe someone's speaking
Maybe someone's speaking
There's always a reason for fire in the night
Are the sleepers now woken?
There's always the hidden beneath the glassy ice
Though it will not be spoken
Let the ice now be broken
That was this week and the last thing
But there's more to the story it seems.
Some weeks ago the State was moving
Drafting up their anti-terror laws.
They say that terror will engulf us soon
If nothings done the blood will run on crowded city streets
That there's no connection to the word “Iraq”  we’re a US stooge
What do they really take us for.
There's always a reason for fire in the night
Are the sleepers now woken?
There's always the hidden beneath the glassy ice
Though it will not be spoken
Let the ice now be broken
I haven't heard the news for ages.

Since 62
(Nankervis/Jones)
Down a windswept highway
Came a last impression of truth
When the day fell to silence
And the night came to light with you
At the dusty table
In a paint-stripped house on that road
Sits a two-score-plus dreamer of no fixed abode
His hand is a-trembling
over what could have been done
Between yesterday morning
and that wild setting sun
So he stands on the landing
Under broad constellations
That incling of sweet-smelling truth
Set fire by his old fixations
Life is calling
Sand is falling
Home is just one more thought away
One more chance, one more glance away
There’s a memory of water
in a wide clear blue sky
And the touch of the silk-milk skin
Of you when you swept by
On the face of the driver
Of the rusting HQ
Tells the tale of a loner
Travelling since 62
Since 62

Earth Man
I need to thank one man
In the only way I feel I can.
He took a wild road south
there to live and work his holy vision out.
Claimed a ravaged land
where for decades only hungry cattle ran.
And in the years that passed
planted trees and coaxed a living forest out.
I want to give thanks to you Earth Man
Give thanks while the grim weeds succumb to you hard hands
You show me what it’s worth
What can be done for our damaged land, Earth Man.
You dug up the heavy stones
Raised them up in building sturdy walls and homes
Caught the rays from the sun
Knowing there for all the cleanest power does come.

I want to give thanks to you Earth Man
Give thanks while that sun glistens now on your bent back
You show me what it’s worth
What can be done for our damaged land, Earth Man.

You are a gift to the world
And there’s so few among the realms and will of men.
Your life flows quietly by
Amid the screaming clamour for fame and note and wealth
I want to give thanks to you Earth Man
Give thanks while the wind’s still a flying through your hair
You show me what it’s worth
What can be to renew this land, Earth Man.

High Time
I figure it’s high time I told you I love to be with you
I figure it’s high time I told you I do
I’m thinking it’s long overdue
that I tell you how much I care for you.
Oh yes it’s high time
High time
How the trees have grown
since we turned the earth with spade
Where once was hot sun
there’s now cool moist shade.
So much is created by a marriage of souls
So much taken for granted, and how little of truth
may be told.
May be wrapped up and hidden
Like a too precious china doll
And then sold to the likeliest bidder
Who shouts so loud
So I figure it’s high time I told you I love to be with you
I figure it’s high time I told you I do
I’m thinking it’s long overdue
that I tell you how much I care for you.
Oh yes it’s high time.
High time

Takes My Breath Away
I looked up once and there was life
I looked up once and black was white
I saw myself a wisp of will in time
A match-lit flame in the wind of a winter’s morn
A butterfly in a midnight storm
I watch the world and it’s wheels of change
Could there really be a part to play?
A rapid white water river, an arrow from a quiver
Shot straight and clean
Well there’s your life and it’s gone before it’s been
A fleeting shadow across a screen
It takes my breath away
Thinking, speaking of all you will not become
Closing doors on all you maybe should have done
The rooms are wide the emptiness fills with what’s really your life
And what abides is what you find inside
Rhythm, the pendulum swinging through nights and through days
Serves you well in setting you hard in your wily, wizened ways
Your mortal coil you know to be less than you now
And all that is spoiled is held like a tree holds an owl
It’s all you somehow
The wing on the night until break of day takes you breath away.
It is here and it is now
Then again nowhere to be found
And in the end we speak of silent sounds
Watch the sun going down on a dying day
See the starlit sky lightyears away
Takes my breath away
